Arts and Science-the Life Story of Jiang Ying and Qian Xuesen

Qian Xuesen is an internationally known scientist and great pioneer of China’s space mission, while his wife, Prof. Jiang Ying, is an outstanding music educator. They helped each other and joined in hands in face of humble situations, and together composed a heavenly song of art and science. This exhibition aims to lead visitors to have an inside look at this couple’s mutual emotional world and to trace their distinguished and brilliant lives.

This exhibition falls into two parts. Part one, named “Race in Music World, Be Known in Art and Literary Circles”, introduces Pro. Jiang Ying’s growth and artistic career. Jiang Ying comes from an honourable family, is the daughter of Jiang Fangzhen, one of the most famous military theorists in modern China, and received a good family education since childhood. She  studied in the famous McTyeire’s School for Girls, Shanghai Municipal Committee High School for Girls, Berlin University of Music, Musikhochschule Luzern of Switzerland, and finally stepped into the hall of European classic art songs and became well known. After her return to China, she started to teach in the Central Conservatory of Music, worked hard and exerted her utmost efforts to bring up a great number of talents in vocalitywith international fame all over the world. She is not only a teacher, but also a sincere friend of her students, famous in the music world for her excellent performance and morality.

Part two, named the “Felicity of Husband and Wife to Walk through Life Journey”, tells us the love story and happy marriage of Jiang Ying and Qian Xuesen. Due to family friendship of their father generation, Jiang Ying and Qian Xuesen knew each other well since their childhood and finally got married. During their stay in the United States, this couple helped each other and passed through official persecution from the US government. It was the understanding, support and effort of Jiang Ying that gave Qian Xuesen great consolation and enable  him put his heart and soul to work. This couple led a happy marriage and family life, and they helped each other in work and gave respect and care to each other in daily life, together writing their own harmonious symphony of life.

The exhibition was displayed in the special exhibition hall of the Qian Xuesen Library on May 18, 2013. Besides, it was displayed successively in the outbound aisle of Jiao Tong University station of NO.11 metro (September, 2013), and 1911 Revolution Museum in Wuhan (from January to March, 2015).
