Opening ceremony of the exhibition in memory of the 30th anniversary of Qian Xuesen’s theory about the 6th industrial revolution

The year 2014 marked the 30th anniversary of Qian Xuesen’s theory about the 6th industrial revolution. In order to commemorate the world famous scientist and promote his profound scientific thinking, Shanghai Jiaotong University Qian Xuesen Library organized the exhibition "Turning Desert into Fertile Soil---in Memory of the 30th Anniversary of Qian Xuesen’s Theory about the 6th Industrial Revolution". The opening ceremony was held on Sept 26, 2014.

People attended the opening ceremony included: Liu Shu, Chairman of China Territory Economics Society Sand Industry Committee, former Vice Governor of Gansu Province and former Vice President of China Association for Science and Technology, Ma Xilin, Honorary Dean of Gansu Sand Industry Research Institute and former Deputy CPC Party Secretary of Gansu Provincial Party Committee, Xia Ri,Honorary President of Inner Mongolia Sand Industry and Grass Industry Association and President of Inner Mongolia Sand Control Foundation, Yang Limin, Honorary President of Inner Mongolia Sand Industry and Grass Industry Association, former Disciplinary Inspection Team Leader of The Commission for Discipline Inspection of CPC Central Committee in the Ministry of Transport, and former Deputy CPC Party Secretary of Inner Mongolia Party Committee, Wang Tao, Dean of Chinese Academy of Sciences Lan Zhou Branch, President of International Desert Research Association and President of Gansu Qian Xuesen Sand Industry Foundation, Guo Xinli, Deputy CPC Party Secretary of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Zhu Jian, Deputy CPC Party Secretary of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Qian Yonggang, Chief Librarian of QIan Xuesen Library, etc. The opening ceremony was presided by Zhang Kai, Secretary of Party General Branch and Associate Librarian of Qian Xuesen Library.

Zhu Jian delivered the welcoming speech on the ceremony. He said that Qian Xuesen’s theory about the 6th industrial revolution, especially the theory about sand industry, has fully demonstrated his forward-looking and innovative insight. The exhibition was held in Qian Xuesen Library of Shanghai Jiaotong University where he spent his undergraduate years. This was not only to commemorate the constructive theory and strategic concept proposed by Qian Xuesen 30 years ago, but also to make more people understand Qian Xuesen’s theory about the 6th industrial revolution and the sand industry, and to call upon more people to do this basic work. Shi Guiquan, Director of the Exhibition Department of Qian Xuesen Library, made an introduction about the the exhibition. The Director of Erdos Engebei Desert Science Museum delivered a speech. Later, China Territory Economics Society Sand Industry Committee, Gansu Sand and Grass Industry Association and Inner Mongolia Sand Industry and Grass Industry Association gave books and desert rice sample to Qian Xuesen Library as gifts. At the end of the opening ceremony, Guo Xinli declared the official opening of the exhibition. After the opening ceremony, all participants visited the exhibition.

This exhibition included five sections: "The 6th Industrial Revolution---Create Large-scale Knowledge-intensive Agriculture", "Sand Industry---Sunshine Agriculture in Desert", "Love the Desert---Support Sand Industry", "Take Practice in Sand Industry---Turning Desert into Fertile Soil" and "Develop Sand Industry---the Enlightenment of History and the Call of Reality". Objects, pictures, literature and other approaches were introduced to demonstrate Qian Xuesen’s determination of strengthening the country and serving the people and to show the fact that he used the forward-looking insights of a strategic scientist to practice his sand industry theory, thus to improve the living conditions of people in western China. In addition, there were also interactive areas in the exhibition, in which there were science games, knowledge popularization and other activities which could attract more young people and help them learn more knowledge.
