A Melodic Tale of Two Cities: Albums of Shanghai & Hong Kong

2017年11月20日

Time: June 30th- August 20th 2017

Place: Temporary Exhibition Hall

This exhibition will unveil a special history of music albums between Hong Kong and the mainland China based on a research project “Protecting Chinese Old Records”. The collections are mainly from Hong Kong Central Library, with a focus on the Library’s research on Hong Kong’s music culture and landscape since 1956.

Music albums have had a positive and far-reaching impact on all aspects of Hong Kong’s music culture, music education, music industry, film industry and other fields of social development. This exhibition is of special significance for this year marks the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover to China. Hong Kong and Shanghai are joining hands again in this exhibition to bring together their historical documents and albums collections to reshape the two cities’ separate yet bonding relationships in the past 60 years.

As a memorial museum of a scientist, it is no coincidence that Qian Xuesen Library & Museum has always been concerned with the expressions of themes of culture and arts. Dr. Qian and his wife Ms. Jiang Ying shared strong enthusiasm for music. The couple also had a fair collection of albums and records of both western classics and Chinese melodies. As a message carrier of music, albums and records contain many historical and cultural connotations. As exhibited at this exhibition, the collections reflect the aesthetic interest and cultural exchanges of that era. This one-month exhibition will help visitors find and reclaim a unique music memory.
