Paying Tribute to the Great Scientist

2019年03月25日

March 14 falls on the 140th anniversary of the great scientist Einstein’s birth. Qian Xuesen Library & Museum, together with CITIC Publishing House and NetEase News, invited Dr. Fang Zaiqing, Professor Jiang Xiaoyuan and Mr. Yuan Lan, to explore the “unknown” Einstein.

Dr. Fang Zaiqing is the researcher of the Institute of Natural History, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and has been engaged in the scientific and cultural studies of Einstein and Germany for a long time. He has presided over the translation of two volumes of the Complete Works of Einstein. He presented Einstein that is rarely known to the public.

Dr. Jiang Xiaoyuan is the director of the Department of Science History at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Dr. Jiang’s speech focuses on the “unorthodox” side of Einstein. He pointed that Einstein was an unorthodox scientist: just because he became so well known that no one would take him as an unorthodox scientist; rather, he became the master of the mainstream science and the “god’ of the scientific community. “Einstein’s Year of Miracles” has provided us with profound lessons that there are many great discoveries in the history of science with no support from national government at all. “Einstein’s Year of Miracles” is a pure product of academic freedom.

Mr. Yuan Lan, associate researcher of the National Research Center of Hefei Microscale Material Science at the University of Science and Technology, also an active science communicator, introduced the concepts of general relativity and special theory of relativity.
