QLM to Attend the 13th National University Museum Academic Conference

The13th National University Museum Academic Conference was held onNovember 11th in Guangzhou. The Conference was organized by Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine and sponsored by University Museum Committee of Chinese Museum Association (UMC-CMA). Over 180 attendees from 23 provinces\ 98 university museums participated in the conference.QLM vice director Mr. Zhang Kai made a keynote speech in the conference. 



Themed on “university museum for sustainable society”, the conference explored university museum’s development, cultural education, social service,collection and exhibition, as well as technology and application. Professor Song Xiang-guang, director of  UMC-CMA interpreted the newly-published Museum Rules in perspectives of current conditions, background & principles, together with focus & features.QLM vice director Zhang Kai gave the keynote speech “University Museum: Challenges and Solutions” to elaborate on various concepts in museum development: education and operation; non-profitability and marketing strategy;smart museum and digital operation. The speech also drew  QLM’s own experiencesand called on university museums to take active part in university’s development and to confront the challenges with strategic thinking and long-term planning. 

Shared in the conference are also discussions about university museums’common challenges and innovative practices. University museums are generally believed relatively “unnoticed” in the context of a university’s development; how to advocate for more funding and support and to best facilitate public lifelong learning is a common issue in the future. Participants also tackled on topics of museum digitalization,collection and conservation.

During the sessions,the conference also held a UMC-CMA standing committee meeting, in which the committee director and members were re-elected. QLM was officially accepted as a member of UMC-CMA. UMC-CMA newly-elected director, Professor Hang Kan, also directorof Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at Peking University delivered the closing remarks and advocated that university museums need to make the best of academic influence and university culture and to benefit the pubic and society.
