On March 29th, SJTU School of Media and Design and SJTU 120th Anniversary Office hosted the “SJTU120th Anniversary Celebration-Xu Qinghua Huge Cursive-style Writing and Donation Ceremony” at Qian Xuesen Library & Museum Square. Hundreds of SJTU alumni, students and calligraphy enthusiasts attended the event.

On behalf of the university, SJTU President Professor Zhang Jie extended a warm welcome to the guests. Professor Zhang said Chinese calligraphy contains the essence of the Chinese culture and aesthetics;this activity is a tribute to traditional Chinese culture and heritage.Professor Zhang Jie highly praised the contributions SJTU faculty, representedby Xu Qinghua, have made in cultivating the talents. He stressed that great universities inherit the spirit of science and humanities. From the beginning of the new century, SJTU attaches great importance to the development of humanities and social sciences. School of Media and Design and other social science schools were established in the past decade. These Schools brought good social reputations for SJTU.

SJTU dean of School of Media and Design said that science and art are two wings of SJTU’s development. In the history of SJTU, the former President Tang Wenzhi regarded art education as a key area of well-rounded education; in the modern history, art education has become abasic discipline for all students. Reform of SJTU’s general education, and all kinds of other thriving artistic activities are all proof of SJTU’s arteducation.

Xu Qinghua expressed his thanks to all guests and staff who have contributed to make the event successful. He is a huge fan of cursive writing, especially the rich and expressive cursive; and strives to achieve a higher level in this field of art. Meanwhile, Xu Qinghua fondly recalled his calligraphy exhibition ten years ago during SJTU’s 110thanniversary. He hoped this year’s event would leave good memories for all.

Xu Qinghua, born in 1963 in Shanghai, was trained in Zhejiang and received his Ph.D. in China Central Academy of FineArts. He is now Associate Professor of Media and Design of SJTU, a member of Chinese Calligraphers Association, and Vice-President of Shanghai Calligraphers Association.
