The 25th ICOM General Conference will be in Kyoto, Japan from September 1 to 7 next year. UMAC (University Museums and Collections) will also hold its 2019 annual meeting in Kyoto. To encourage more Asian participation for next year’s ICOM General Conference, especially university museums in China and all across Asia-Pacific region, UMAC is joining hands with QLM again to kick off a pre-presentation of UMAC 2019 on September 25th at Xuhui campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

UMAC President Marta C. Lourenço, UMAC 2019 co-directors Akiko Fukuno and Hiroshi Minami were invited to present in the meeting. They also expressed concerns with the huge loss of Brazil’s national museum, and the shared mission to care and promote university museums’ development all round the globe. Around 50 participants from university museums all across China attended the meeting. The meeting was funded by Shanghai Educational Alliance of University and College Museums (SEAUCM).

Marta C. Lourenço explained briefly the contemporary challenges facing university museums, collections and heritage, and then addressed the question of the distinct nature of university museums and collections in her presentation “University Museums and Collections: Being Global and Staying Connected”. UMAC board member Akiko Fukuno traced back the history of Japan’s university museums and how it was interrelated with Japan’s museum industry and social-economic conditions. Vice-president of UMAK (University Museums Association of Kyoto) Hiroshi Minami introduced the structure and activities of UMAK in his presentation.

UMAC also signed two significant agreements with Shanghai University Museum and Electronic Science and Technology Museum.
