Museums are microcosms of city's humanistic history and embodiments of civic civilization. By the end of 2024, there were 171 museums on record in Shanghai, receiving over 40 million visitors a year, a record high, and “visiting museums” has been gradually integrated into people's lifestyles.
On May 18, 2025, coming with International Museum Day celebrations, the 2025 Museum Influence Index (MII) revealed that Qian Xuesen Library & Museum of Shanghai Jiao Tong University has maintained its top position among university museums for four consecutive years. Notably, it achieved its highest-ever ranking to date at 11th citywide in comprehensive influence and 9th in public search popularity.
The top ten positions remain dominated by National First-Class Museums and specialized museums. Although university museums are slightly inferior in volume and number, they have incomparable advantages and potentials in museum discipline construction, scientific research, talent cultivation, exchange and cooperation, forming a mismatch with other museums.
In the category of university museums, the Qian Xuesen Library & Museum of Shanghai Jiao Tong University—awarded the title of National First-Class Museum in May 2024—has topped the list for the fourth consecutive year. As a university museum, the Qian Xuesen Library & Museum has consistently bridged academic and public spheres through innovative exhibitions and educational programs, enabling the public to explore the century-old cultural heritage and cutting-edge academic achievements of SJTU.
Moving forward, the Qian Xuesen Library & Museum will continue to summarize its experience, exploring more application scenarios of mining the spirit of scientists in museum education, and strive to become a core cultural force in supporting the university’s mission to build a world-class university with Chinese characteristics.
