Qian Xuesen Star

Since Qian Xuesen had made outstanding contribution to various scientific and technological fields such as aerodynamics, solid mechanics, engineering cybernetics, physical mechanics, etc., after approved by International Minor Planet Center and International Minor Planet Naming Commission, No. 3763 minor planet spotted by the Purple Mountain Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences was given the name “Qian Xuesen Star”. The photo shows the grand naming ceremony of “Qian Xuesen Star” held in Great Hall of the People on Dec 21, 2001 by China Society and Technology Association, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering.

  • Qian Xuesen passed away on October 31, 2009. A mourning hall was set up at the night at his home on Fucheng Road, Beijing.

Sand Industry Fund

Proposed by Qian Xuesen, the Sand Industry Fund of China Science and Technology Development Foundation was set up in Beijing on September 27, 1994. The management committee of the fund consisted of director, deputy director and 13 members. Liu Shu, Secretariat of China Association of Science and Technology, was the director of the management committee, and Dong Zhiyong, former Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Forestry, was the deputy director. It is a special fund of permanent donation, aiming at assisting entities of sand industry, promoting scientific ideas of sand industry and desertification control model, making people understand the natural environment features of desert area, and promoting the growth of talents. The fund comes from domestic and overseas project funds as well as donations of domestic and foreign organizations, groups and individuals who care about and support desert control.

  • In November, 1993, an overseas Chinese from Indonesia donated HKD 300,000 through Xinhua News Agency Macao Branch to support the sand control industry that Qian Xuesen promoted. On November 8, 1993, Qian Xuesen passed on the donation to desertification control professor Liu Shu (first one on the right) after which the preparation group for sand industry development fund was set up.

    On Apr 14, 1995, Qian Xuesen commissioned his secretary Wang Shouyun and Tu Yuanji to donate his HKD 1 million prize of “Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation” to Sand Industry Development Foundation.

Various statues in memory of Qian Xuesen

  • Qian Xuesen statue was set up in Shanghai Jiaotong University on December 11, 2011 when Qian Xuesen Library was officially opened. Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee, attended the opening ceremony of Qian Xuesen Library and unveiled the statue. This bronze head statue was created by professor Zhang Dedi from Central Academy of Fine Arts, showing Qian Xuesen looking at distance with a gracious face and deep eyes. The 200kg statue is 3.6m high in total, of inwhich the head takes up 1.5m.

    On October 22, 2002, Qian Xuesen’s bronze statue was set up in Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in the year which marked the university’s 50th founding anniversary. Zhu Guangya, Vice Chairman of CPPCC, and Qian Xuesen’s wife Jiang Ying attended the unveiling ceremony. The 2m full-length bronze statue of Qian Xuesen is located inon the lawn of Qiushi Square in front of the library, showing Qian Xuesen in his youth holding a book thinking. Qian Xuesen, who used to give speeches to and have discussions with the students of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics for several times,have long been concerning about and support the development and construction of the university.

    On September 13, 2008, the University of Science and Technology of China held the unveiling ceremony of for Qian Xuesen’s statue. Qian Xuesen was one of the founders of the university. The statue was designed by Central Academy of Fine Arts. On the back of the statue writes his words: “All scientific creations are the accumulation of common things.” The front side of the statue is a black board on which inscribes the formula of second cosmic velocity.

  • In the year which marked the 60th anniversary of the establishment of New China,with the support from China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) and other organizations, Beijing Haidian Experimental Middle School held the inauguration ceremony for Qian Xuesen’s statue, which was also a photos exhibition, on May 19, 2009 to promote Qian’s patriotism and scientific spirit.

    On November 2, 2009, Qian Xuesen’s statue was set up in the affiliated high school of Beijing Normal University where Qian Xuesen finished his middle school study from 1923 to 1929. The statue is located in front of the red building in which he spent 6 years of learning there: The statue shows young Qian Xuesen in long gown and scarf with a book in his hand, looking high-spirited and vigorous.

    The unveiling ceremony for Qian Xuesen’s statue was held in the library of Xi’an Jiaotong University on December 11, 2009. The 2.1m statue is located on the stairs in od the north gate of the library, showing Qian Xuesen holding his hands in front of himself with a gracious face. His wish was carved on the slate downstairs: “I hope teachers and students of Xi’an Jiaotong University could inherit and promote the good traditions of the university, love our country, respect and promote science, pursue truth, dedicate themselves to the people and develop Xi’an Jiaotong University into a world-class university”. The statue was designed by professor Jia Zhuofei from the College of Liberal Arts of Xi’an Jiaotong University according to his general impression of Qian Xuesen.

  • Qian Xuesen’s statue was set up at the Institute of Mechanics of China Academy of Science on November 30, 2011. The statue which is on the square of Institute of Mechanics shows Qian Xuesen in suit. After coming back to China in 1955, Qian Xuesen began to make preparations for establishing the Institute of Mechanics of China Academy of Science. In 1956, he became the first director of the Institute.
