Qian Xuesen Library & Museum started a new course "Introduction to Qian Xuesen's System Engineering Thought" on April 15 for students of Elite Engineering School at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU).

This introductory course is one of the “Engineer Literacy Course” series to focus on cultivating students’ patriotism and interdisciplinary thinking. SJTU is one of the ten universities that established an elite engineering school in the aim of engineering graduate programs education reform, especially about exploring curriculum reforms. The “Engineer Literacy Course”, therefore is a key trial to the new engineering education.

Li Fang, the Executive Director of QLM who is also in charge of the course, introduced the course's teaching design. She provided a detailed explanation of the course background, objectives and the syllabus. The course aims to guide students to understand the formation of Qian Xuesen's system engineering thought, from which students will grasp the internal driving force that led Qian Xuesen to be a strategic scientist. The course will also introduce the methodology of solving complex engineering and technical problems. It isdesigned to cultivate the core literacy required to become an outstanding engineer and to instill a sense of mission and responsibility that is characteristic of an excellent engineer.

In 2023, QLM released its three-year action plan (2023-2025) as an opportunity to accelerate the transformation of collection resources to curriculum contents. Apart from this graduate course, QLM also undertakes an undergraduate course “Qian Xuesen and China's Scientific Undertakings” to further integrate museum collections and archives to the university’s teaching system.
